The Chartered Institute of Transport, founded in 1919 and headquartered in London, England, is the largest and best known transport institute in the world. On the 18th July 2001 the Organization title was changed to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Comprising over 30,000 members worldwide in 28 countries. The Royal Charter encourages the Institute "to promote, encourage and co-ordinate the study and advancement of the science and art of transportation in all its branches".
The CILT in North America has Regional Councils based in large population centres in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico with members from all sectors of transport including the private sector, various levels of government, the academic world and the armed forces. Its role is to promote the recognition of excellence in transportation through transportation studies, public forums and liaison throughout the transport industry.
Among other things, CILT provides International recognition of designation. International and continental news is provided thought newsletters, magazines and the integrated world-wide website. In addition, several monthly and periodical meetings are held at regional council locations. Periodic conferences and forums related to transport issues are held annually. National and international networking opportunities are also available.
