The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in North America (CILTNA) is holding its seventh Transportation Situation & Outlook Conference in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Ottawa Sheraton Hotel, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
World intermodal freight transport and in particular container trade patterns are rapidly evolving and impacting on the competitiveness of various components of the global and North American transportation system. Container trade, which is the principal facilitator of international goods movement, has grown since 2000 by an average of 11% per year, faster than both the world economy and merchandise trade and is expected to experience steady growth during the next two decades. This is mostly attributable to Asia, particularly to the economic and trade growth of China and India. It is estimated that cargo moving in containers accounts for over 70% of the value of all the international trade that moves via the ocean. The increasing importance for the demand of containerized services, particularly from the Asian market contributed to traffic congestion along the major North American Pacific ports, their intermodal (rail & trucking) network connections (land bridge) as well as on the Panama Canal. This situation has prompted the Panama Canal Authority to invest $5.5 billion for expanding its capacity (third set of locks). Meanwhile, shippers are considering a variety of trade routes to reach the North American markets through its Eastern and Gulf Coasts via an expanded Panama Canal and the Suez Canal.
The objective of the conference is to assess the impact of these developments on present and future situation of the North American transportation system infrastructure services and security including the air freight sector.
Eminent speakers will participate in this conference joining 200 international and North American transportation specialists, policy makers, executives, managers, and professionals in public and private organizations as well as academics involved in the multidisciplinary aspect of transportation and related industries.
