CILTNA PACIFIC REGION
MONDAY, January 15th, 2007, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM
Location:
Canada Room at MEC Offices
149 West 4th Avenue
Vancouver, BC V5Y 4A6
Speaker: Fred McCague, MCILT, FICS
Topic: History of "The Box That Makes the World Go Round"
Containerization is just 50 years old - the first sailing of the Clifford J Rogers of the White Pass and Yukon in November 26, 1955, and the first sailing of Sea-Land's Ideal-X with 56 containers in April 26, 1956 from Newark to Houston are the starting point of a revolution in international transportation. Over the following decade, the first transatlantic and transpacific container services began.
Containerization has had a profound and on-going impact on the global economy, as important to the rise of Japan in the 1970s as it is today with the rise of China. In North America it has also reshaped railroading and trucking.
Today, some 18 million containers are constantly crisscrossing the seven seas. These standardized receptacles have become the building blocks of the global village.

Speaker: Paul Landry, President & CEO, BC Trucking Association
Topic: Port of Vancouver's Container Strike
At the Crossroads: Opportunity's for Long Term Stability or Future Port Disruptions?
The June 27th truckers strike may have cost as much as $62 million per day. By Aug 5, containers were moving again, under the interim licencing program set up by the Port. Could this strike have been avoided and what were the particulars leading up to such significant losses? Will the Port Authority's 90 day interim licencing scheme create a longer term solution or further labour disruption?
